Here’s 5 cool things you can add to your concrete pool.

If you’ve been contemplating a pool for quite some time, you’ve likely already made a lot of decisions. You’ve weighed up the benefits of concrete over fiberglass, you’ve assessed your block and gotten to know where a pool might best be built and you’ve thought hard about the money - this is a big one, pools don’t come cheap, any type of construction project has lots of variables and so being clear on where you want to be in terms of budget is incredibly important.

There’s lots of serious decisions to be made when embarking on a pool project. They have a place, they are important. But don’t forget all the fun decisions to be made to create the most perfect pool for you.

Here’s some really cool picks to think about when designing your own concrete pool.

A hidden pool cover

I’ll start with the practical choice and one you will need to consider before the design of your pool commences. These Aussie Undercover pool covers are the absolute business. Completely concealed under deck and with the ability to tile or deck the lid of the cover so you quite literally could walk over it and not notice. We’ll need to design the cover’s pit at the back of the pool which is why you want to make this choice early on, but if you’re considering a pool heater or if you’re in a particularly shady, tree drenched area - a pool cover is a no brainer.

Curved edges

The beauty of a concrete pool is it’s ability to be totally customisable in terms of shape and size. It’s perfect for us as we navigate designing and building in tight spaces, but perfect for you to soften the impact of the pool in your space and accommodate your needs for functionality. Ensuring the pool ties in perfectly with your home is important, got a bunch of Moroccan arches you want to pair your pool with? No problem. Love the look of curved burnished concrete coping? Sure!

Curves are very, very sexy.

An acrylic pool window

My favourite pool windows are the ones that give our clients a view from their home. When concrete pools are built out of ground and higher than outdoor entertaining areas or indoor living spaces, a pool window adds a lot of beauty to what would otherwise just be the pools plain old concrete wall. They add light and give us the ability to enjoy the water from all different angles of the pool.

Steps and benches and beaches

Seems like a simple thing, to add a bench or a seat or a shallow beach area for the kids. And it is simple. But with careful consideration of where the sun shines the longest, or where you might best sit in the pool to chat to your mates who are having a cold drink by the BBQ area means that you get the most functionality out of your pool.

I remember as a kid, we had a little lip going all the way around our pool and it was awesome as at any point when we were tired of swimming, we could retreat to the pools edge and have a rest. I also know now with the pool we have in our backyard, that the 1m of shallow beach space is invaluable for my toddler who loves to play with his trucks whilst the big kid’s swim.

Fancy interiors

The interiors of your concrete pool are something to pay particular attention to. Not only will the colour choice affect the colour of your water, but if done right your interiors will really personalise your pool. You can render on designer beadcrete or you can fully tile your pool. Pick interiors that compliment your home and pick surrounding tiles and materials that compliment the interior pallete. Look at your pool project holistically during the design phase, it’s not just about a big piece of concrete in the ground, it’ll be a design statement in your home for many years to come. Make it pretty.
